Employment Law for Managers

Benefits to you:

By the end of the workshop delegates will have an increased awareness of recent and forthcoming UK employment legislation with particular focus on:

· Themes merging from recent changes in employment legislation
· Family friendly legislation
· Overview and update on discrimination law (Race, Sex, Disability, Age, Religion, Sexual Orientation)
· Unfair Dismissal & Statutory disciplinary and grievance procedures

Objectives:

· To increase awareness of recent and forthcoming legislation in order to deal with people issues in a manner that reflects the highest standards of employee relations and minimises risks and costs to Wyeth.

· To debate any employment issues, HR policies and their connection to UK legislation.

· To provide some practical techniques to help you to apply some aspects of the recent legislation within existing H.R. policies and procedures.

· Provide an opportunity to refresh existing knowledge of key basic employment rights.

· Identify any further training and development needs you may have in relation to employment law and managing people issues.

Target Audience:

UK based directors, managers, and supervisors with responsibility for managing people.

Delegates may already have a basic awareness of the principles of employment law and require a refresher and an update on key changes. Whilst this workshop includes some practical exercises it does not attempt to provide managers with the 'soft' skills of managing people issues, unless requested.

Workshop pre-work:

· Participants are asked to complete a short pre-course law quiz (multiple choice) and they will be guided through the answers.

Managing People issues within the law

Target Audience:

For individuals wishing to develop their legal and practical knowledge in this area. Suitable for Line Managers and junior HR staff.

Course Objective: Managers will:

- be more confident and competent in handing difficult people situations at an early stage through enhanced interpersonal skills and model discussion structures for conduct and performance (capability and health) problems and disciplinary and grievance issues, thereby avoiding many of the issues. This will allow managers to significantly improve motivation and improve performance at work of poor performing team members.
- be more able to identify contractual right and employment law issues that face them on a daily basis
- have the skills and knowledge to respond to these issues and problems in an appropriate way, utilising HR input when appropriate
- be able to apply the disciplinary and grievance procedures in a confident and knowledgeable way.

Workshop methods:

- Practical application of skills learned through debate and examination of case studies, individual and group exercises with skills practices utilising model structures for difficult discussions.

Participants Resources:

- A comprehensive participants manual incorporating Employment Policies, practical ‘how to’ model structures for disciplinary and grievance issues, with manager preparation sheets and a summary of the relevant legislation.

This can be run as a 2 day course, or 2 separate 1 day courses.
